Windows 10 - News and interesting topics from Windows 10 1909

Microsoft officially announced today that the rollout for Windows 10 users will begin today. With KB5001391 you could already activate it in Windows 10 2004, 20H2 and 21H1.

Interestingly, Windows 10 1909 is even given the chance to activate the weather in the taskbar with the upcoming and last May update. The new KB5001396 already contains the weather and news. I can't quite understand, but the support of 1909 is also only ended for the Home, Pro and Education. All Enterprise versions will get updates until May 10, 2022.

And the company computers, in particular, will be keen to have the weather and the news in the system tray.

Well, what the heck. How to activate or adjust the news and interesting topics in the system tray, we have described you in more detail below.

Deactivate or activate news and interesting topics in the system tray

The new function "News and interesting topics" can be set as a weather symbol with text, only the weather symbol, via the context menu. Or you can switch the function off.

The associated setting in the registry is:

  • Enter Windows key + R regedit, start it and navigate to this path:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Feeds

Double- click the DWORD value (32-bit) ShellFeedsTaskbarViewMode and change the value:

  • 0 = weather icon and text is displayed
  • 1 = Only the weather icon is displayed
  • 2 = The weather display is deactivated

A function will be added later so that the mouse-over function can be deactivated. Then the news and the weather only open when you click the button.

Here it is the DWORD value (32-bit) ShellFeedsTaskbarOpenOnHover

  • 0 = mouse over is deactivated
  • 1 = Mouse Over is activated and opens the messages as soon as the mouse is positioned over the icon in the taskbar.

News and interesting topics can also be deactivated in the group policies

  • Press Windows key + R, enter gpedit.msc and start
    • Or enter group policies in the taskbar search
  • Local Computer Guidelines -> Computer Configuration => Administrative Templates => Windows Components => News and Interesting Topics
  • In the right part of the window, double-click on the setting "Activate news and interests on the taskbar" and
    • Activated and not configured = weather and news are displayed
    • Deactivated = weather and news are not displayed
