While most of the world is quarantined, it is not surprising that many couples and single people wonder what coronavirus means for their sex lives. With this in mind, journalists from the British edition of The Guardian asked the 5 most popular questions about the proximity during the pandemic to three specialists – a doctor in the Department of Infectious Diseases, a professor at the School of Public Health and an epidemiologist.
Is COVID-19 sexually transmitted?
So far, there are no obvious examples of sexually transmitted coronavirus infection. Preferably, the virus is spread through droplets secreted from the human respiratory tract. And contact with contaminated surfaces is considered a secondary mode of transmission.
However, kissing is a very common practice during sexual intercourse, and the virus can be transmitted through saliva. So the virus can be transmitted through kissing. There are also data on oral fecal transmission of COVID-19.
Is it possible to have sex during quarantine?
If you or your partner have a coronavirus infection, it is best to avoid each other as much as possible.
But for people who have no symptoms and no recent probable contact with patients and almost never leave their homes, this is another story. If you live with a regular sexual partner and have no symptoms or probable risk of infection, sex can be a good way to have fun, keep in touch and relieve anxiety during this potentially stressful time.
And what about new partners?
For now, everyone should try to stay home as much as possible. And contact people only in extreme cases, not forgetting the distance. This will definitely make sex a problem.
The number of sexual intercourse may decrease over the next few weeks, but no one forbids other forms of sexual pleasure – sexting, video calls, masturbation.
And what about sex toys?
After each use, just wash them thoroughly with soap and water.
Sex toys have been a safe medium of sexual pleasure since long time. If you wash it properly and use them again and again, it will not bring you any infection. During pandemic, the sale of these toys have boomed as never before.
What to do to those who do not have a couple now and do not want to wait a few more months?
If you worry that social distancing will take too long for you, make sure you and people you know are quarantined now. The sooner we do this, the sooner we will see a decrease in the number of new cases, and the sooner we will be able to change our communication practices. Instead of focusing on the future, you should focus on the moment here and now.
Use these few weeks to redirect your energy, explore yourself, think about what you are looking for. And you can do it yourself. This can be a great opportunity to learn other ways to communicate with new sexual partners that you can meet online.
