Last week, the messaging and voice communications service Discord caused quite a stir when it announced that it would ban iOS users from NSFW servers. But now a partial withdrawal from this decision has been announced.
Content marked with the abbreviation NSFW, ie "Not Safe For Work", primarily means nudity, but it can also be all conceivable media that you don't want others to see by chance. Discord announced last week that it would categorically ban NSFW servers if users attempt to access them via iPhone or iPad. The reason for this was guidelines from Apple, which Discord wanted or had to adhere to.
But now Discord is partially backing down because it has meanwhile been announced that on iOS only those servers will be completely blocked that offer access to "explicitly pornographic content". Of course, users between the ages of 13 and 17 are still locked out. Discord users who are older than 18 years get the chance to get to a server aged 18 and over.
iOS loophole makes it possible
"Users 18 and over trying to join or access new NSFW servers on iOS must sign up to view NSFW content on the desktop before they are allowed in these areas," writes Discord in a blog post. As mentioned, pornographic content remains taboo on iOS, users who want to see it have to use the desktop or web version.
The new Discord solution makes use of a loophole in the Apple guidelines: Because "occasional adult 'NSFW' content" is allowed on iOS apps if they are hidden by default. Apple requires website activation in this case and that's exactly what Discord does.
