Popular CoD Warzone cheat is a malware installer

The game publisher Activision has again taken up the issue of malware in-cheat software and is now warning players about a popular tool. For this purpose, a report was published that shows the great risk potential of malicious code in the cheats.

Activision is now concerned with a popular cheat program for Call of Duty: Warzone. Activision writes that players who absolutely want to use cheats are urged to protect their systems from malware. The company does not name the cheat in question. This is reported by the online magazine Vice.

Call of Duty: Warzone - Update brings a new 200-player mode

According to a study by Activision's internal anti-cheat team, the cheat software all too often serves as a gateway for malware developers. So you are preparing easy access to the players' computers under the pretext of using the cheat to gain an advantage. One of the cheats in question has been heavily promoted, but instead of offering a "real" set of cheat tools, it instead delivers malware onto players' PCs.

Cod Dropper v0.1

Activision investigated a program called "Cod Dropper v0.1". This special tool is a so-called dropper, malware that is used to install additional malicious code, for example, to steal the victim's credentials. The examined dropper is adaptable and can load any trojans, spy software, etc. onto the PC. The problem with this is that real cheat hacks often ask users to deactivate their antivirus or other security software.

Activision points out that this level of access is of course exactly what malicious code distributors want. "This is not based on sophisticated tactics, but on the willingness of the victim to deactivate various security settings on their own system," explains the Activision report. "It is common practice to configure a cheat program to run with the highest system privileges."

Cybercriminals are currently using the distribution via Warzone cheats, especially for crypto mining. Gaming PCs are particularly "popular" with such frauds because of their powerful graphics cards.
