Microsoft has added a new function in Windows 10 File Explorer that increases the spacing between folders and files. This view is intended for more convenience with touch devices.
But you can undo these large gaps between the folders and files in the File Explorer. We show you how to do it.
This tutorial is suitable for Windows 10 21H2 and higher and 21H1.
Reduce the distances in the File Explorer again
If you don't like these large spaces in File Explorer, then proceed as follows:
- Open the View tab in File Explorer and the folder options on the right
- It is also possible to right-click on quick access => Options
- View tab
- Search for "Use compact mode" and check the box.
- Click on Apply and OK and you have the old view in File Explorer again.
- If you prefer to use the larger distances in File Explorer, simply remove the check mark.
That's it already.
Changes in the registry
The change in the registry can of course also be used. This change is only for the current user. Not system-wide.
- Press Windows key + R, enter regedit and start
- Go to the path:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ Advanced
- Now double-click UseCompactMode in the right part of the window and change the value.
- Value = 0 - The distances in the File Explorer are larger
- Value = 1 - The distances in the File Explorer are as before. So less.
