Samsung 980 NVMe M.2 SSD |
Samsung is behind a new family of M.2 SSDs, the 980. The name is tricky because we are close to the name 980 Pro. The two SSDs do not have the same performance. So be careful.
This SSD 980 is an M.2 format flash drive. Its dimensions are 22 mm wide for 80 mm long. Supporting the NVMe protocol, its mechanics are not compatible with PCIe 3.0 x4. We find a controller without DRAM.

The SSD embeds 136 layers NAND Flash 3D TLC memory chips. They are not unknown since we find them on the 980 Pro version. On the performance side, the 980 expects good speeds with sequential transfer speeds of 3500 MB / s read and 3000 MB / s write. These are of course maximum values. We find IOPS scores of 500K and 480K in random read and write 4K QD32 and 4K QD1.
The range consists of three models with capacities of 250 GB, 500 GB, and 1 TB. Samsung should launch these novelties by the end of the month.
