The YouTube channel CryptoAtHome wanted to test a method to improve the temperatures of the RTX 3090 Founders Edition, which they published with a video on their channel.
Nvidia RTX 3090 Improves GDDR6X temperatures by 25 degrees
Apparently, the GeForce RTX 3090 Founders Edition graphics card has temperatures that can be very high, especially in the area of GDDR6X memories. What CryptoAtHome discovered is that by replacing the factory heat pads with more efficient ones, temperatures can be reduced by up to 25 degrees at full load, even when mining.
It is well known that RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 graphics cards tend to have memories that get very hot under sustained full load. We are talking about temperatures around 100 degrees Celsius. The RTX 3090 averages memory temperatures of 94 to 104 degrees Celsius. These values are dangerous and can cause the graphics card to have problems during games or even hang the system. In fact, Micron says its GDDR6X memories have a maximum operating temperature of 95 degrees. Hence the importance of finding a way to lower temperatures at full load.
During testing, it was shown that high memory temperatures could cause the RTX 3090 Founders Edition to perform below 100 MH / s, with a maximum of 82 MH / s. Other models with superior cooling could reach 125 MH / s.
By reducing the memory to 18 Gbps and increasing the fan speed to 88%, the memory reached 110 degrees Celsius.
The thermal pads used were Thermalright's Thermal Pad 85x45x1.5mm. CryptoAtHome did the mining test again with the memories at 21.15 Gbps and the fans at 70%, thus achieving temperatures of between 84 and 86 degrees and obtaining a performance of 100 MH / s mining.
The Thermalright Odyssey Thermal Pad 85x45x1.5mm retails for $ 14.99 and comes in packs of two. To make this replacement I need three pads. With an investment of $ 30, it is possible to improve mining performance and improve the life of this graphics card.
