NVIDIA RTX 3090 gets 3.8 more FPS with Resizable BAR in 4K

It seems that the update of the RTX 3090 to receive in Resizable BAR does not mean much for gaming performance purposes. Captures have been shared in Chiphell in which an NVIDIA RTX 3090 does not suppose an abysmal FPS increase after using the alternative to Smart Access Memory.

First, it was AMD with its Smart Access Memory that shook the FPS nest, while NVIDIA offered no alternative. It introduced its Resizable BAR at CES 2021 initially on the RTX 3000 Mobile, although the desktop RTX 3000 would be progressively supported. This week we will see assemblers offer their updates to users, although in Chiphell they are already ahead of sharing impressions.

RTX 3090 with Resizable BAR in 4K, 3 FPS more on average?

First of all, we frame ourselves on the Asian Chiphell forum to see an RTX 3090 whose model remains unspecified. It could be a GALAX or Gainward GPU because these already offered a patch for all their RTX 3000 in order to receive Resizable BAR.

For those who do not know what Resizable BAR, this is the alternative to Smart Access Memory for AMD, which uses PCI-Express for the CPU accesses the VRAM GPU directly (explained roughly). The first compatible GPU was the RTX 3060, which already came with its native Resizable BAR support.

For its part, NVIDIA announced that its Founders Edition models would be the first to receive this update at the end of March. However, the user “wesleyxy” has tested the GALAX tool on an RTX 3090, ensuring that this utility does not work with other brands.

We emphasize that Resizable BAR is only compatible with a few games, which will change progressively in the future. Currently, there are 8 titles that work with this one:

  • Red Dead Redemption 2.
  • Gears 5.
  • Forza Horizon 4.
  • Borderlands 3.
  • Battlefield V.
  • Assassin's Creed Valhalla.
  • Metro Exodus.
  • Watch Dogs Legion.

Since Chiphell, user wesleyxy has tested 6 of these in 4K resolution with all Ultra (including Ray Tracing), and the rest of the equipment consists of a Ryzen 9 5950X and a DELL U3219Q monitor. Well, we leave the image and the average below.

Watch Dogs 65 62
Gears 5 89,2 86,3
Forza 181 175
Borderlands 81,6 80,09
AC Valhalla 72 69
93,8783333 91,0016667

Resizable BAR is expected to increase performance further at lower resolutions, such as less powerful NVIDIA Ampere models. The truth is that it is a disappointing gain that has little impact on the experience, while AMD achieves an improvement of 11% in Forza Horizon 4 with Smart Access Memory.

In our tests, we found that the percentage ranges between 0 and 19.4% difference in performance, depending on the game. Battlefield V was the game that took the most advantage of AMD technology, going from 36 to more than 40 FPS, which is not bad at all. We also saw that, in Control, the variation was 10 FPS apart.

We will wait to see more evidence, but the present ones are not at all hopeful. You can see the captures of each test in the link of the source of Chiphell

Do these figures disappoint you? Do you think NVIDIA hasn't polished it yet?
