Nintendo and Niantic will work as a team to develop augmented reality games for mobile devices. 'Pikmin' will be the first.
In a totally unexpected way, Nintendo announced its partnership with Niantic, the popular developer studio behind Pokémon GO and Ingress. Thus, both companies will work together to develop augmented reality video games focused on mobile devices. Of course, these titles will be based on the successful franchises of the big N, with Pikmin being the first to venture. It will be available at the end of this year, although the exact date is unknown for now.
It is worth mentioning that this is the first time that Nintendo and Niantic have partnered directly since the responsibility of Pokémon GO rests with The Pokémon Company. Taking into account the great creative abilities of both companies, surely their playable proposal will be extremely interesting. Also, it is impossible not to imagine what Niantic could do with other Nintendo brands in the future. The range of possibilities is quite wide.

Pikmin's AR game aims to make walking a fun activity
From what little we know so far, the proposal of both companies aims to encourage us to walk. "The app will include game activities to motivate you to walk and make this activity more enjoyable," said Niantic through a statement shared on its website. Another important point is that the new Pikmin game will be developed by Niantic's Japanese studio, which is located in Tokyo. It opened its doors in 2018 and this will be its first big project.
Shigeru Miyamoto, the father of Mario and Pikmin, also had words to highlight the importance of the agreement: “Niantic's augmented reality technology allowed us to experience the world as if Pikmin were secretly living around us. Based on the theme of making walking fun, our mission is to offer people a new experience that is different from traditional games. We hope that Pikmin and this app will become a life partner." For his part, John Hanke, CEO of Niantic, stated the following:
“As we continue to expand our portfolio of games, the next natural step was to team up with Nintendo. We look forward to shaping the future of augmented reality together, bringing beloved characters from the Nintendo game to life for mobile game players around the world."
Niantic and Nintendo anticipate that they will reveal more information in the coming months: “We will share more details about the applications in the coming months. We are excited to build this partnership as we pursue our mission to encourage people to explore the world together. " Although it is not confirmed, it is possible that those in Kyoto will take advantage of the summer to give us our first look at the AR game of Pikmin . E3 digital and the Summer Game Fest are ideal events to show it off.
