Microsoft Edge Legacy will be removed with the April Update

Today Microsoft once again pointed out that support for the old Edge is ending. As already written, it will then be removed from the system with the April update.

Here is the first announcement of the Spartan project from 2015 and the great new browser with its own engine. blogs.windows.com.

It was already reported that the Edge Legacy will receive the last security update on March Patchday 2021. It has now been announced that the new Edge (Chromium) will be installed via update with the patch day on April 13th.

It is, therefore “forced-installed” with the cumulative update, as long as it should not have been installed yet. “Applying this update to your devices will remove the no longer supported Microsoft Edge legacy desktop application and install the new Microsoft Edge. The new Microsoft Edge offers integrated security and our best interoperability with the Microsoft security ecosystem and is at the same time more secure than Chrome for companies running Windows 10. "

This will not affect Windows 8.1 and Windows 7. As a note: This change can happen with a "C update" at the end of March if Microsoft should provide an optional non-security-relevant update.

The following will be affected

  • Windows 10, version 1803, all editions (not until April 2021)
  • Windows 10, version 1809, all editions
  • Windows 10, version 1903, all editions
  • Windows 10, version 1909, all editions
  • Windows 10, version 2004, all editions
  • Windows 10, version 20H2, all editions (only the old Edge is removed here, as the new one is already installed)
