Intel demonstrated a laptop that has an eight-core Tiger Lake-H processor running at a 5.0 GHz clock speed.
This seems to be quite an engineering achievement, considering that this chip is designed for laptops and not for desktop computers.
Although Intel has not specified which model it is referring to, it is probably the flagship Core i9-11980HK, which comes with eight cores and Hyper-Threading technology. Unfortunately, the base clocks or other features are not specified, but 5.0 GHz is the single-core boost clock.
The presentation of the laptop was made at the GDC and it would be a prototype device that will be marketed in the coming months, presumably, in the second quarter.
The Tiger Lake-H processors use Willow Cove cores, which come with a 24MB L3 cache and a revamped DDR4 memory controller. One of the most important renovations has to do with the number of PCIe 4.0 lanes, which is now 20 units, as well as the integrated support for Thunderbolt 4.
Intel used the Total War video game, which is characterized by intensive use of the CPU. No details were given about the GPU they were using, but the GPU is believed to be inconspicuous due to the size of the laptop's screen (15.6 inches).
Laptops with high-end Tiger Lake-H processors are going to arrive in the second quarter, Intel confirms, and it looks like they are going to offer very competitive performance. We will keep you informed.
