The graphics card market has spiraled out of control. Prices are skyrocketing due to a supply unable to meet demand.
The subject is hot and burning. For months the graphics card market has been chaotic. Despite the promises nothing changes, the worse the situation is. The rates recommended by AMD and Nvidia have become unimaginable.
To be convinced of this, just take a look at a price comparator. The market is tight with a significant gap between demand and supply.
While stockouts affect some models, the availability of others results in prices getting out of control. The record was set by the GeForce RTX 3080, whose pricing jumped 322% against 313% for that of the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti. Here is a summary
Price Comparison | ||
Recommended Prices | Current Prices | |
GeForce RTX 3090 | 1,599 euros | 2,749 euros |
GeForce RTX 3080 | 699 euros | 2,249 euros |
GeForce RTX 3070 | 499 euros | 1,149 euros |
GeForce RTX 3060 Ti | 399 euros | 1,249 euros |
GeForce RTX 3060 | 329 euros | 769 euros |
Radeon RX 6900 XT | 999 euros | 1,849 euros |
Radeon RX 6800 XT | 649 euros | 1,539 euros |
Radeon RX 6800 | 579 euros | - |
Radeon RX 6700 XT | 479 euros | - |
We observe that some GeFore RTX 30 are available but have prices doubled or even tripled compared to those charged by Nvidia for its Founders Edition. The same is true with the latest Radeon RX 6800 and 6900 XT from AMD. For their part, the Radeon RX 6800 and 6700 XT are unavailable.
Mining demand is not the only problem. The breakdown between supply and demand is also explained by a shortage of raw materials, components and various bottlenecks in the manufacture of chips. Finally, the countermeasure put in place by Nvidia to try to reduce demand was the victim of a big blunder.
