Apple would be working on augmented reality contact lenses that would be released in "10 to 20 years" according to Ming-Chi Kuo. We would see cases of mixed reality in 2022.
Apple would be working on a technology that would allow experiencing augmented reality using contact lenses, according to a report published by Ming-Chi Kuo. They would launch the product in "ten to twenty years."
"Contact lenses will take us from the era of visible computing to invisible computing," he explains in his report. Ming-Chi Kuo is one of the most reputable analysts regarding future company launches.
Apple's augmented reality contact lenses could offer a highly integrated experience without the need for extra, heavier gadgets like glasses or bulky headsets.
Kuo does not offer any more details, but it is a technology so far removed from our current reality that at times ten years seems little to have a way of making such a miniaturized and integrated technology work. Not only that but also getting them to have good autonomies. That said, it would be absolutely normal for Apple to be working on prototypes along these lines.
Mixed reality headsets in 2022
Kuo has also published a report where he assures that Apple is still on the path of launching mixed reality headsets in 2022. The first report on this future product was made by Cnet in April 2018 and they mentioned a release date of 2020. This, obviously, did not happen.
But just because Apple is working on projects doesn't mean they are launched when rumors indicate, or that they see the light of day. There are dozens, probably hundreds, of prototypes within the walls of Apple Park that we may never know of.
They may also have been delayed for a myriad of reasons. From the market, studies indicate that it is not the time to launch them or delays due to the coronavirus. It is possible that, simply, the product is not yet under the quality standards that the company expects and requires.
According to the analyst, the mixed reality helmets would weigh between 200 to 300 grams. But "if Apple manages to solve some technical challenges, they could weigh between 100 to 200 grams." Much less than any product available today. It would be around $ 1,000.
The mixed reality headsets would offer a significantly more immersive experience than any competing product, with Sony micro-OLED displays capable of operating independently of the iPhone.
Kuo's report is in line with another published by Mark Gurman in Bloomberg who also assures that they will be launched in 20222, although with a higher price, about $ 3,000. The Information, who agreed on the price, recently published that Apple is working on a construction similar to the headband of the AirPods Max, to reduce its weight.
Lightweight augmented reality glasses: in 2025
Lastly, Ming-Chi Kuo believes that Apple will launch its augmented reality glasses in 2025 at the earliest and that there is no first prototype designed yet. These would be much lighter and more stylish than a helmet.
According to his report, these glasses would offer an experience with augmented reality similar to what the iPhone offered us with the internet. That is, the opportunity to experience new technologies anywhere. It also ensures that they will have an important integration with the future Apple Car.
