In addition to the official announcement of the Radeon RX 6700 XT, AMD has today eliminated a major point of criticism of the current Resizable BAR support. So far, support has been limited to the current Ryzen processors of the 5000 series based on the Zen 3 architecture. Now support for SAM (Smart Access Memory), the marketing name of the technology at AMD, is being expanded to include the Ryzen 3000 series.
We have already reported several times about how it works. As part of the test of the Radeon RX 6800 XT and most recently the GeForce RTX 3060, we have also already looked at the performance increase.
On the graphics card side, Resizable BAR will only be supported from the current GPU series until further notice: Radeon RX 6800, Radeon RX 6800 XT, and Radeon RX 6900 XT, and the new Radeon RX 6700 XT.
Many will not be surprised by the news about support from the Ryzen 3000 series. Some motherboard manufacturers have been offering BIOS versions for weeks or months that enable Resizable BAR to be activated with these processors. Officially, this should only be possible on motherboards with an X570 and B550 chipset. However, there are also mainboards with an X470 and B450 chipset where the use of Resizable BAR was possible.
