The computer manufacturer Acer is said to have been the victim of a blackmail Trojan. Acer itself is currently reluctant to release any information. The Revil group that is said to be behind the attack, however, is informative and publishes internal documents from Acer.
The attack has not yet been confirmed. The Revil Group is said to have demanded a $ 50 million ransom from Taiwan-based electronics and computer manufacturer Acer for the release of encrypted data. That would be the highest known ransom that has ever been claimed in such a case and it is still far from the end of the flagpole. Because Revil is said to have linked conditions to the payment - among other things, the claim increases to 100 million dollars if it is not paid by March 28.
In return for the payment, the cybercriminals offer a decryptor, a vulnerability report and the deletion of the files they stole. According to the online magazine Bleeping Computer, Revil announced that the Acer network was broken into on March 14th. Various documents have been published as evidence.
Acer confirms "abnormal situations"
When asked by BleepingComputer, Acer did not give a clear answer as to whether the company was affected by a Revil ransomware attack. Instead, the company said it had notified the authorities of "recent abnormal situations". Now the investigation is underway.
It said: "Acer routinely monitors its IT systems and most cyberattacks are blocked well. Companies like us are constantly exposed to attacks and we have reported the abnormal situations we have seen recently to law enforcement and data protection authorities in several countries. " When asked for more details, Acer replied: "There is an ongoing investigation and for security reasons, we are unable to comment on any details.
