Most recently, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which awards the Oscars every year, could no longer deny the trend towards streaming. But this year - due to the pandemic - the turning point has come to an end because Netflix dominated the nominations.
The Academy has looked suspiciously at Netflix and Co. for years because the general opinion was that movies belong in the cinema. But in times of Corona, cinemas are closed almost everywhere and in most cases, films cannot be seen any other way. On the one hand, this means that Oscar candidates are shown on streaming portals from the outset, on the other hand, the competition is also limited this year.
In any case, one Netflix movie dominated the recently announced Oscar nominations, even if it was slated for a streaming release in the first place. Because David Fincher's Mank is an absolute winner with ten nominations, at least before the award ceremony on the night of April 26th. The black and white film, which is about the making of Citizen Kane, was nominated for best film, best director (David Fincher) and leading actor (Gary Oldman).
35 nominations for Netflix [See Nominations Here]
The Trial of the Chicago 7, also a Netflix original, had six nominations. Amazon also received six nominations with Sound of Metal, and Nomadland, Minari, Judas and the Black Messiah and The Father can also look forward to six maximum possible awards. All of these films were also nominated for best film, plus Promising Young Woman in this most important category. All nominations can be found here. Netflix had a total of 35 nominations, eleven more than last year. It is also to be expected that there will be more golden statues this year, as there were only two Oscars in 2020. Mank will certainly make sure of that because that's exactly the kind of film that the Academy loves.
