A modder shows how he put 16GB of VRAM memory in his Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070

Modder, overclocker and PC enthusiast VIK-on wanted his Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 to have more memory than the GeForce RTX 3060, so he decided to modify his Palit GeForce RTX 3070 GamingPro OC by removing its 8 memory chips (K4Z803256C- HC14) of 1 GB capacity each (8GB) to replace them with 2 GB chips (K4ZAF3258M-HC14) and reach 16 GB, surpassing the 12 GB presented by its little sister.

For the additional memory to be recognized, it was enough to flash the BIOS, but Nvidia with these GPUs has everything covered, to the point that the company's partners cannot modify anything in the BIOS until Nvidia reviews everything and its approval. It is indicated that each GPU has a special configuration of the band, that for example if it was configured to 00000 bits, it was indicated that Samsung memory chips of 8Gb (1GB) were used, while 00001 was the code for Micron. Finally, after conducting numerous tests, he was able to determine that with the 00110 configurations the GPU could already take advantage of the 16 GB of memory.

Although at first, it was unstable, a couple of adjustments with the EVGA Precision-X overclocking tool ended up making everything perfect: the 16 GB of GDDR6 memory was recognized, and all the benchmarks and stress tests were passed without any failure and slightly better performance than the Founders Edition model, so the modification was successful.
