Upgrade your NVIDIA RTX 3060 and use Resizable BAR on Comet Lake, Rocket Lake, and Ryzen

Initial support for NVIDIA Resizable BAR has arrived in the form of drivers, which has been released in conjunction with the new RTX 3060. It works for laptops and desktops, but we will need to meet several requirements: motherboard, chipset, and certain AMD or Intel processors.

NVIDIA introduced Resizable BAR after seeing the rise of Smart Access Memory on the RX 6000, which offered a small FPS gain. Now, it has released new drivers that will allow RTX 3060 users (laptops and desktops) to use this PCI-Express technology and earn multiple FPS in video games. However, you will have to meet several requirements to use it.

NVIDIA Resizable BAR: gain FPS with your RTX 3000

Resizable BAR is a technology released by NVIDIA for the RTX 3000 (initially for the RTX 3060), which is optional and makes use of the PCI-Express interface. While we play, the VRAM of the GPU works by transferring textures, shaders, or any object from the CPU to the GPU.

The problem was that the transfers are very many, so with this technology the CPU can access the entire GPU buffer to free it of work. In this way, transfers are made immediately, without having to queue for multiple requests.

This technology was announced at CES 2021, along with the RTX 3000 Mobile and RTX 3060. However, it has not been released until now, a move that materializes with the GeForce 461.72 GRD drivers. In theory, where there will be more gain is in laptops that are equipped with the NVIDIA RTX 30, but we will have to check if the model supports it.

Resizable BAR support requirements: CPU, board, and chipset

Unfortunately, not all users of an RTX 3000 (a must have) will be able to use this optional technology, as certain requirements must be met at the system level:

Compatible MotherboardsChipsetCompatible CPU

AMD

ASUS, ASRock, Colorful, EVGA, GIGABYTE, and MSI

400 series: those that are compatible with Ryzen 5000

All 500 series

All Ryzen 5000 (Zen 3)

Intel

Z490, H470, B460, and H410

All 500 series

Comet Lake-S

Rocket Lake-S

On the other hand, we must download the most recent Game Ready driver, as is the case with GeForce 461.72 GRD. For the RTX 3060, we already have driver support, but the other NVIDIA Founders Editions and custom models will have to wait until the end of March to receive the VBIOS update.

To say that NVIDIA continues to work with many manufacturers so that the support of Resizable BAR reaches the majority of products. So exposed manufacturers will release BIOS updates later this week (some have already done so) to improve support.

Intel leaves this small statement made by Fredik Hamberger, manager of the segment of premium notebooks and enthusiasts of the brand.

Intel has worked with NVIDIA to enable BAR Resizable, an advanced PCI-Express technology across the entire PC ecosystem. This feature can give gamers an extra boost in FPS with 11th Gen Intel processors and with select 10th Gen systems.

Finally, we can verify that the support is activated from the NVIDIA control panel, by clicking on "System Information". Make sure it is "Yes" or "Yes" in the Resizable BAR row.

Performance gain and game compatibility

Little by little, support for NVIDIA Resizable BAR will be expanded in all games, but the following are currently supported :

  • Assassin's Creed Valhalla.
  • Battlefield V.
  • Borderlands 3.
  • Forza Horizon 4.
  • Gears 5.
  • Metro Exodus.
  • Red Dead Redemption 2.
  • Watch Dogs: Legion.

The Computer Base colleagues have already made the first comparisons of the RTX 3060 with and without Resizable BAR. Specifically, they have tested the following.
