Google launched Password Checkup, a new feature for Android that will check if your password was compromised in a massive leak.
A few months after debuting in Chrome, the tool that alerts you if your passwords have been compromised will arrive on Android. Google announced the arrival of Password Checkup in an attempt to offer greater protection to users of its mobile operating system.
Password Checkup will notify you if your password was exposed in a leak. The tool will work through AutoComplete with Google and will alert you when typing.
According to Google, when the user enters a password in a form or stores it, the system uses an API that checks if the data is in a list of known compromised credentials.
The new feature for Android accesses a database of more than 4 billion users and leaked passwords for verification. To ensure data privacy, the actual determination of whether the password was leaked occurs on the device.
Password Checkup won't share your unencrypted passwords with Google
Although data is shared with the Google server, only an encrypted hash of the password comes out of our mobile. Subsequently, the server returns a list of encrypted password hashes that share the same prefix and performs the comparison locally on our smartphone.
Google ensures that people's privacy is the most important thing, so it will use encryption techniques created by its own researchers and from Stanford University.
Users can access the Password Manager for a complete review of those they have saved. Password Checkup is compatible with Android 9 and later versions and requires that you have the AutoComplete service active. To achieve this we will go to Settings> System> Languages and input> Advanced and we will touch Autocomplete Service to choose Google.
Password Checkup debuted as an extension for Chome in 2019 and by the end of 2020, it was implemented by default in the browser for mobile devices. Now it's the turn of integrating it into Android to guarantee the safety of users.
The technology suggests combining this feature together with the option of generating passwords and biometric authentication. Another alternative will be to opt for 1Password or Bitwarden to manage your credentials. Most payment managers have a function to verify if your data has been compromised.
