With all its security aura, Apple products have been under a severe malware attack for the past few months. Hackers have realized that this is a market segment that matters and that is why they have turned their attention to these systems.
With proven results in recent attacks, this is increasingly a certainty. Now, and from what has been revealed, there is new malware that is spreading on macOS. Its way of acting is strange and is puzzling security researchers.
There is more and more malware for macOS
Even with all its security measures in place, Apple's macOS is increasingly a system where hackers and attackers focus on. There are ways in which these attacks can be successful and this has been actively explored.
The interest is such that even the new SoC M1 from Apple seems to be already under attack. Just last week it was found a malware dedicated to this SoC and managed to escape Apple's control, being, however, disabled and unusable.
It is not known how it attacks security
There is now new malware, also with special attention to SoC M1, which is puzzling for security researchers. Silver Sparrow follows the same infection model as many others, but at the moment it is not dedicated to doing anything, yet.
Whoever revealed this new attack analyzed the behavior of the malware and concluded that its behavior is anything but normal. Every hour he contacts a central point, trying to receive new orders and potentially a malignant payload. So far, nothing is passed back.
Apple's M1 is also one of the victims
So far it is known that this malware is spread on about 30 thousand machines, in more than 150 countries. There is also information that Silver Sparrow has a self-destruct mechanism and a version dedicated to the SoC M1, in order to be more effective.
The big question right now is what this malware could do to macOS and Apple equipment. The front door is open and hackers can send their destructive cargo at any time to do the damage that no one wants.
