The European Union Fines Spain 15 Million Euros For Not Adopting The Data Protection Regulations

It seems that Spain has not been very good at complying with the Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and that is why the Court of Justice of the European Union today condemned the country to pay a fine of 15 million euros for not having adopted the personal data protection directive on time. Worst of all, it also imposed a daily fine of 89,548.20 euros until Spain did not comply with this organic law.

Spain did not deny having breached its obligation, but justified that it was due to " very exceptional institutional circumstances essentially of the particular political context and the need to transpose the Directive by means of an organic law".

This closes a case that dates back to July 2018, when the European Commission opened an infringement procedure against Spain since it had not adopted the Data Protection directive that the rest of the countries had already complied with on May 6 2018 as the deadline. Due to the fact that Spain has persisted in non-compliance since it did not adopt or communicate the necessary measures, a fine of close to 90,000 euros a day comes to encourage Spain to comply with European regulations.
