The Switch is the second fastest-selling console in Nintendo history. The company presented its financial report for the third fiscal quarter, which ended in December 2020, and reported the sale of 79.87 million switches in 46 months after launch.
The number puts the video game in second place among those who sold faster in the Japanese brand portfolio. As the survey by Daniel Ahmad shows, in 46 months the Nintendo DS (fastest so far) had sold 83 million units. The Wii totaled 75 million units in the same period.
It should be noted that the Switch launched in March, while the other consoles launched around November, which is why the Switch has its holiday bump earlier than the PS4 and Wii in the chart above

I would expect the Switch to dip back to that Wii line, but overtake it soon.

Here is how it compares to other consoles when launch aligned.
In the same time frame, the PS4 was around ~67m and the PS2 was around ~69.5m. The Wii was just under 75m. pic.twitter.com/ox3NQy8Ye4
The expectation is that the Switch will keep the pace of sales above the Wii line.
Games
The company also opened some figures on the sale of games in late 2020. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity was the leader in the period, with 3.5 million units sold, followed by Pikmin 3 Deluxe (1.9 million) and Mario Kart: Home Circuit (1 million).
Nintendo has also updated the list of the six best-selling games on the console, all of which have already hit the 20 million mark. See the biggest hits:
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - 33.41 million
- Animal Crossing: New Horizon - 31.18 million
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - 22.85 million
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild - 21.45 million
- Pokémon Sword / Shield - 20.35 million
- Super Mario Odyssey - 20.23 million
Results
With good sales, Nintendo closed its quarter with revenue of US $ 13 billion, which meant an increase of 37.3% compared to the same period in 2019. However, in terms of operating profit, the giant saw its numbers almost double at the end of the year. Compared to December 2019, Nintendo's operating profit grew 98.2%.
The expectation for the first quarter of 2021 is the US $ 15 billion in revenue, which would represent a growth of 22.3% compared to last year.
The figures are available on Nintendo's investor website.
