Pixar revealed on Thursday (25) the first new content of its newest animation: Luca, the new film from the studios responsible for thrilling the audience after the success of Soul.
According to the official synopsis, Luca "takes place in a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera, the original animated film is a story of maturation about a young man who lives an unforgettable summer filled with gelato, macaroni, and endless scooter rides. Luca shares these adventures with his newfound best friend, but all the fun is threatened by a deep secret: he is a sea monster from another world just below the surface of the water."

According to information from Collider, the animation will also be a period adventure, but it is still unclear whether the story will take place before or after the Second World War.
Luca is directed by Enrico Casarosa, who directed the 2011 Oscar-nominated short film La Luna (available on Disney +) and since 2017 has been a member of the so-called Pixar Brain Trust, the studio's senior creative advisory board. Luca also has production by Andrea Warren, who worked on Cars 3. Who signs the script is the duo Mike Jones (who wrote Soul and also worked on The Incredibles 2, Toy Story 4, and Viva: Life is a Party) and Jesse Andrews (Every Day screenwriter and Me, You and the Girl Who Goes Die).

"This is a deeply personal story for me, not only because it takes place on the Italian Riviera, where I grew up, but because at the center of this film is a celebration of friendship. Childhood friendships often define the course of who we want to be and these are ties that are at the center of our history in Luca, "said director Casarosa in an official statement. "So, in addition to the beauty and charm of the Italian coast, our film will feature an unforgettable summer adventure that will fundamentally change Luca."
The animation cast is full of new talent, with the award-winning Jacob Tremblay (Extraordinary, Jack's Room) bringing Luca to life, while Jack Dylan Grazer (IT - The Thing, Shazam!) Lives his best friend Alberto. The rest of the cast is formed by Emma Berman who will be Giulia, a friend of Luca and Alberto; Marco Barricelli will be her father, Massimo. Maya Rudolph is Daniela, Luca's mother. Marco Barricelli plays Massimo, Giulia's father. Jim Gaffigan will be the original voice of Lorenzo, Luca's father. The villainous role of the story goes to the Italian comedian Saverio Raimondo.

Luca will also bring a scenario that escapes realism. Casarosa told Collider that "the computer naturally wants to be realistic and perfect. So I suggested: why can't we bring a painting aspect to our films? How can we use textures to make it a little more imperfect?"
The director also noted that the film will have a dual environment and that the story will take place in two cities. "Our protagonist comes from a hidden community and then there is part of the film there, but most are a little bit more where they go, which is, of course, the neighboring city. There are two worlds. Also, in many ways, we want to take the whole world to Italy, [to] this picturesque little Italian town, which is very similar to the type of low town I grew up in when I was a child and spent summers there."
Luca is scheduled to debut in June this year (Image: Press Release / Pixar) |
Luca follows the traditional Pixar calendar and has its premiere scheduled for June 17, 2021. It is not certain whether Disney will continue with the release of the film as it was with Soul, which was made available directly in the Disney + catalog; if will play as Mulan, whose streaming was made through Premier Access; or whether it will be like Raya and the Last Dragon, whose Disney + debut will be paid for, but will also be shown in select cinemas based on municipal protocols.
