GPU shortage will last until 2022, Nvidia and AMD are hard hit

Bad news for PC users, especially the most players on the platform. According to industry analysts, the global shortage of chips (GPUs / CPUs) that is shaking the market is not going to stop until 2022.

According to several industry analysts, the stock of GPUs will continue to be scarce throughout 2021 and will extend to 2022. They also comment that demand exceeds supply by 30% and that it will need between three and four quarters to normalize this situation. This means that the shortage could end in the first months of the year 2022.

Since last year we are seeing difficulties to buy graphics cards, whether they are Nvidia's RTX 30 series or AMD's RX 6000 series, even previous series are also affected. The CPU market is also being affected, but not at the level of the latest generation graphics cards.

After the lean season is over, manufacturers will be able to go back to full-throttle manufacturing, but that doesn't mean there is no longer a shortage in stores. That transition process could take three to six months to get the products to hit the shelves with a good volume of units.

“We believe semiconductor companies are shipping 10-30% below current demand levels and that it will take at least 3-4 quarters for supply to catch up with demand and another 1- 2 quarters for customer / distribution channel inventories to return to normal levels, ” said Harlan Sur, an analyst at JP Morgan.

Another source that comes from Hardware Times has reported that AIB partners such as Gigabyte, Asus, MSI, among others, are receiving less than 20 units of the RTX 3080 for the South Asia region. China received only about 100 units during the month of February.

On the other hand, TSMC, one of the largest semiconductor manufacturers, is going to invest some 28,000 million dollars in expanding its facilities during 2021, although it will take many months to build and install the equipment.

Everything indicates that this year will be very complex for players who want to update their equipment or build them from scratch, due to the scarcity and high prices. We will keep you informed.
