Signed by the pandemic, the ceremony will have a lot of virtuals but it will make up for it with two stages, great stars, and unpublished surprises. In addition, an Argentine presence stands out.

Catastrophe cinema imagined a lot, but not so much. Months of confinement, the entertainment industry on hiatus, and the planet in suspense by a Chinese virus that attacks the lungs and takes lives. It is not the synopsis of a new movie that breaks the box office, nor the preview of a series worthy of a marathon. It is the history that our humanity is going through in this new decade and that conditions, among other things, the 78th installment of the Golden Globes.
The award that every year serves as a prelude to the Oscars - which this year will not be in February, but in April - is the recognition of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). And it will be delivered at 10 pm (in Argentina) this Sunday, February 28. The transmission can be followed by TNT (dubbed into Spanish) and by TNT Series (in English).

There will be no preview because this time the party will be without a red carpet, or limousines, or jokes to the guests upon arrival. No lavish hotel changes, no cocktails, no exclusive events for the winners. There will be no big crosses to watch for, no thunderous ovations in a crowded room. However, don't be discouraged! Because to compensate for the restrictions imposed by the pandemic, the ceremony promises shows, comedy shows, mega figures, and exciting moments.
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, comedians from Saturday Night Live, will be in charge of the hosting. The first will mark the times from the Rainbow Room in New York, while the second will be in the original headquarters of the delivery, the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. Seconded by presenters for the occasion, Salma Hayek, Laura Dern, Jamie Lee Curtis, Angela Bassett, Joaquin Phoenix, Renée Zellweger, Cynthia Erivo, Kristen Wiig, Margot Robbie, Michael Douglas, are expected. Catherine Zeta-Jones, Kevin Bacon, Kyra Sedgwick, among other great stars. Plus? Jane Fonda will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award, as will Norman Lear, for her contribution to TV.

"We are following all the protocols and guidelines for COVID outlined by government offices," said the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in relation to the few present at the ceremony, who must come with a negative test and also control their fever upon entering. Social distance and chinstrap will be mandatory, except for a few minutes on stage. The nominees? It is estimated that they will be mainly from their living room and with speeches of thanks live, but virtual. We'll see.

Until then, the list of candidates is long but full of peculiarities. Netflix is the company that sweeps. He has 42 nominations: 22 for film and 20 for television. Amazon follows, with seven film nominations. And HBO, with seven for television. In terms of series candidates, The Crown is in the lead, with six. They are followed by Schitt's Creek, with five, and Ozark, with four. If we talk about cinema, Mank, with six, and The Trial of the 7 of Chicago, with five.
Olivia Colman in Netflix's The Crown |
In the Best Drama category, the independent film Nomadland, starring the impeccable Frances McDormand, stands out. But El Padre, with Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman - also nominated by The Crown - is not far behind. As Best Director, this year and for the first time in history, there are more women than men. The applicants are Regina King - A night in Miami -, Chloé Zhao - Nomadland - and Emerald Fennell - A young promise -, to compete with David Fincher - Mank- and Aaron Sorkin - The Chicago 7 Trial -.
As if that were not enough, Argentina has a young talent as a stellar candidate: Anya Taylor - Joy, who was born in Miami but grew up in Buenos Aires and has Argentine and British nationality, by her parents. She is presented with two nominations: for Best Actress in a Miniseries, for Lady's Gambit, and for her leading role in the film Emma, the Jane Austen classic.
Argentina's Anya Taylor-Joy as Beth Harmon, in Lady's Gambit |
More double nominations? Sacha Baron Cohen is going for The Chicago 7 Trial for Best Supporting Actor, and for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical, for Borat 2. In addition, there is a posthumous nomination for Chadwick Boseman - made The Mother of the Blues - who died last August of colon cancer. They are not far behind Mark Ruffalo, with his double character in the drama I Know This Much Is True. Not Hugh Grant, who with a cynicism that worries in The Undoing. As Best Actress in a Drama, Vanessa Kirby makes the talk in Fragments of a Woman.
And if there is something leftover in this installment, it is exquisite talent in both rising names and renowned stars. It will depend on their versatility to make this gala a party - different, but a party at last - so that an audience that today, more than ever, is hungry for entertainment.
