Ghostbusters: Afterlife was rescheduled for a 2021 release. Here's a review of everything we know about this movie in the franchise.
We've been waiting for the release of Ghostbusters: Afterlife for a long time. And it is that its premiere on the billboard was scheduled for the summer of 2020, however, as we well know, the whole world was stopped by the pandemic. In addition, there have been other tentative dates for its arrival in cinemas, but they have also been postponed due to the seriousness of the health situation.
Despite all the changes to the release date, Ghostbusters: Afterlife is currently scheduled to arrive in November of this, less and less promising, 2021. There are many details that we already know about this sequel: cast, synopsis, trailer and other details. That is why we review here everything we know about this long-awaited film in the franchise.
The legacy of an unforgettable franchise
In 1984, Ghostbusters was released, a film that would become an instant classic. The success was such that a huge franchise was built from it and it became a cultural benchmark. After this first film, a sequel would arrive in 1989, although with much less success at the box office and before the critics. Since the first film had, in addition to a great collection, several nominations in the most outstanding awards in the industry, such as the Golden Globes and the Oscars. In the latter, for example, it was nominated for best visual effects and best original music.
Animated series, comic books, video games, board games and other merchandising of Ghostbusters have existed since. The legacy of the franchise reached diverse cultural levels and marked generations. In 2016, a reboot by Paul Feig was released, however, it did not do well either at the box office or with the public. One of the factors that influenced its failure is that its main cast consisted of only women: Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig and Kate McKinnon.
Either way, what is clear is that the Ghostbusters franchise has not ceased to interest us since Ivan Reitman released his film in 1984. A curious and very moving fact is that the director of the new film is none other than Jason Reitman, son of the director of the first film. Jason recently remarked that his father went to see Ghostbusters: Afterlife at the studio management presentation and tearfully remarked that he was proud of his work. We hope that all fans of the franchise.
'Ghostbusters: Afterlife', neither reboot nor remake, but a sequel
Like many of the great films that were expected for 2020, from Ghostbusters: Afterlife we already have a lot of information. Both because of the passage of time and because of the great expectation about her. In this case, much of the main cast, synopsis and even a trailer look quite promising and gives us several interesting clues.
The synopsis of the tape reads:
When a single mother and her two children arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind.
That aforementioned "grandfather" is none other than Egon Spengler, played by the late Harold Ramis. Another confirmed fact that is already exciting is that the mythical Bill Murray, as well as Dan Aykroyd, Annie Potts, Ernie Hudson and the great Sigourney Weaver will return to their original roles. And it is not a reboot rat as such, nor a remake, but a sequel to The Ghostbusters of the eighties.
The great cast of 'Ghostbusters: Afterlife'
On the other hand, in addition to the original cast, Ghostbusters: Afterlife brings new faces and characters that promise not only to continue with the franchise but to unveil a new adventure full of ectoplasm and surprising artifacts. Much of this can see in the trailer that premiered in December 2020.
In the new cast, we can see Paul Rudd as Mr. Grooberson and Carrie Coon as Callie, the single mother mentioned in the synopsis. Callie's children will be played by Finn Wolfhard and McKenna Grace, who will play Trevor and Phoebe, respectively.
The premiere of Ghostbusters: Afterlife is scheduled for November 11, 2021. We will be aware of any changes in the dates for this year, and of the new ways of releasing movies via streaming.
