Xiaomi presents Mi Air Charge, its remote wireless charging system for mobiles and other devices.
The wireless charging distance is one of those Utopian technologies that have spent years hearing about, but for certain reasons, never quite materialize.
But that could be about to change, and everything indicates that Xiaomi would be the firm capable of achieving this, thanks to its new Mi Air Charge technology.
Through its official blog, the Beijing firm has announced this new wireless charging method for mobile devices, whose peculiarity lies in the ability to send energy to the device from a base located several meters away.
Mi Air Charge, Xiaomi's remote wireless charging technology
Xiaomi's remote charging technology, called Mi Air Charge, bases its operation on two aspects: power transmission and positioning. For this, the technology relies on a charging base of a considerable size, with five integrated phase interference antennas, capable of detecting the position of the device to be charged in a range of several meters. Once the device has been "found," a phase control matrix made up of 144 antennas transmits millimeter waves directly to the phone through beamforming.
In this way, the base is capable of offering a charging power of 5W, which although it is not the highest in the market - Xiaomi itself has mobile phones that support up to 50W of power through wireless charging -, it will be more than enough taking into account that the device must not be docked to a charger or resting on a base.
It must be borne in mind, yes, that this technology would not work with current Xiaomi devices. And the device itself has also been equipped with a miniaturized array of antennas, designed both to share position information and to receive energy from the charging base.
"The receiving antenna array made up of 14 antennas converts the millimeter-wave signal emitted by the charging cell into electrical energy via the rectifier circuit, to turn the science fiction charging experience into reality."
One of the great advantages of this system, according to Xiaomi, is that the charging base can charge several devices at 5 W simultaneously, and the firm ensures that physical obstacles do not affect the efficiency of the charging system.
With this technology, Xiaomi aspires to shape a future totally without cables, with devices such as watches, bracelets, speakers, or lamps being able to obtain power without the need for cables through a charging base.
But better not throw away your old charger yet: for now, Xiaomi has not revealed its production plans for this technology, and for now it is still an innovation that does not seem destined to see the light of day in real devices in the short term. In any case, we are confident that the firm will be able to bring its remote charging system to reality sooner rather than later.
How does wireless charging work?
First of all, you have to explain how wireless charging works. As we explain in this complete article that we advise you to take a look at first, this system is based on an electromagnetic induction electricity transmission system, which works at distances of up to 40 millimeters.
In clear words, what we need is a base connected to a power source and a receiving device that must be compatible with Qi technology. In the case of smartphones, the charger is the base or charging station, and the phone is the receiving device for electricity.
Although wireless charging is much more comfortable than conventional charging because we do not have to connect the smartphone to any cable, it is true that it is still not as effective.
Best Xiaomi phones with wireless charging
Now that you know what wireless charging is and how you can use it on a compatible Xiaomi mobile. Now, it is time to examine the Xiaomi mobile catalog in search of the best models compatible with wireless charging. They are as follows:
- Xiaomi Mi 11
- Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro
- Xiaomi Mi 10
- Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra
- Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G
How do I know if my mobile has wireless charging?
We already know how wireless charging works more or less and that in addition to a charging base connected to the current, it is necessary that our device be compatible with it.
As we have said a few lines above, one of the easiest ways to find out is to consult the specification sheet of our terminal, which can be found on the manufacturer's website. Another method is to search for device information on pages like Andro4all.
Despite all this, if we still have any doubts, we will tell you about another infallible method to know once and for all whether or not our terminal has wireless charging.
These are two free applications for Android that we can find in the Google application store and that will tell us if our phone is compatible or not. So easy and simple. Download, install and start.
It is Verifier wireless charging and Wireless Charging Checker, two simple applications to use and tell us the instant if our Android smartphone supports wireless charging.
Why do we recommend informing us before? Because surely some of you are thinking of acquiring a charging base, so before spending the money, better inform yourself.
