A South Korean netizen broke the news that AMD hopes to increase TSMC’s production capacity by 50% or more, but due to previous (to Apple) commitments and TSMC’s capacity is currently fully loaded, TSMC cannot Fulfill this demand. Therefore, AMD is considering plans to transfer part of its GPU/APU production to Samsung.
Based on this, AMD is internally discussing whether the cost of optimizing the design for Samsung's new process or the shortage caused by TSMC's continuous production capacity is more serious, and which choice can bring higher benefits to the company.
The Taiwanese media "DigiTimes" once reported that TSMC has signed a contract with Intel and will use the 3nm process for Intel's foundry CPU from the second half of next year.
In addition, due to the high demand from many major customers such as Apple, TSMC’s production capacity has reached the upper limit. At present, major manufacturers including Apple, Qualcomm, Nvidia, AMD, and MediaTek are all interested in competing for TSMC’s production capacity. Even Apple’s chips once accounted for half of TSMC’s production capacity. In addition, AMD processors, graphics cards, next-generation host chips, and automotive chips have also experienced shortages before.
Of course, some of Qualcomm and Nvidia products using Samsung's 5nm process also face out of stock problems, but at least the intensity of competition is slightly weaker.
