In three months or so, Microsoft will launch the final version of Windows 10X, its new "modern" operating system designed, above all, for tablets and low-end computers with a touch screen. At first, this system will not be as open as Windows 10 in the sense that we can install it on any PC, but it can only be used on the equipment that comes with it from the factory. However, this does not have to be like this. And, in the absence of a few weeks before its launch, a group of developers has managed to install Windows 10X on any PC.
Microsoft offers users the possibility of trying Windows 10X from a virtual machine, with Hyper-V, which we can download from the Microsoft Store. This allows us to get an idea of what the operating system really is like, but the truth is that we are very limited in what we can or cannot do. After all, the base is still normal Windows 10.
Although, as we have said, Windows 10X does not arrive until next March or April, a filtered version of this operating system has been circulating on the network for several days, which has been used to show us how it is possible, with a few simple steps, to install 10X on a normal computer natively, without virtual machines.
Installing Windows 10X is a long and somewhat complicated process
The requirements we need to carry out this process are, on the one hand, a Windows 10 system installed on the PC. Although it might work with 20H2, it is recommended to have the latest Insider build on hand to avoid issues. And, of course, an 8 GB USB stick, which we will use to create the installation media.
It will also be necessary to have a graphics card with DCHU drivers, a UEFI card with Secure Boot disabled, and a hard disk of more than 100 GB available. An Internet connection is also vital, without which we will not be able to finish installing and configuring the operating system. It is recommended to have an Ethernet network card to avoid problems. And, finally, the image of Windows 10X, which we can download from this tweet:
Once all of the above has been completed, we simply must follow this guide to start our PC. With it, we will create a bootable USB, and install the system on the hard disk to boot from it. Of course, it must be borne in mind that the process completely overwrites the hard drive, so all the data stored on it will be erased.
ADeltaXForce claims that there are some computers that fail to boot. Little by little, the guide will be updated with new steps and tricks with which to make this system work in any PC configuration. Likewise in the future, Microsoft simplifies the process and allows users who want to install 10X on their PCs. But, for now, it seems that we will have to do it by hand.
Windows 10X won't be complete until 2022
Although in several weeks we will have the first version of Windows 1oX among us, this new system is not the one that Microsoft promised or even the one that we can test in virtual machines. Rather, it is an "incomplete" version of this OS. A version released early to pave the way, but nothing to do with the desired result.
Windows 10X was to be a specially designed and optimized operating system for dual-screen devices, starting with the new Surface. However, as this device has lagged behind, the support for the dual-screen has done as well. It won't be until 2022 when these devices arrive when we see their true potential.
