In the middle of last year, AMD announced the Ryzen Threadripper Pro processors, designed for high-performance workstations from its partners. Today, as part of an event held at CES 2021, it was announced that such processors will soon become available for purchase to ordinary enthusiasts.
Many expected from today's AMD presentation the announcement of Threadripper HEDT processors based on the new Zen 3 architecture, but this did not happen. The situation with the supply of Zen 3 semiconductor crystals remains very tense, so for the time being AMD refrained from releasing CPU models, for the production of which a large number of CCD chiplets would be consumed at once. Instead, the company has re-released the old Threadripper Pro 3000 Zen 2 processors for the second time, which in fact were presented back in July last year.
Threadripper Pro 3000 processors are not the same Threadripper 3000 processors that have been available for enthusiasts for a long time. They exist within the framework of a different, more advanced sWRX8 platform, which is distinguished by support for eight-channel DDR4 memory (both regular UDIMMs, as well as RDIMMs and LRDIMMs) and 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes instead of four memory channels and 64 PCIe 4.0 lanes in regular Threadripper. Expanding the capabilities of memory controllers and PCIe 4.0 is associated with the use of a full-featured I / O chiplet from EPYC processors (Rome generation) in Threadripper Pro.
Meanwhile, you need to understand that we are still talking about processors built on the old architecture, while the modern Zen 3 architecture with 8-core CCX and an increased IPC rate for users of high-performance workstations, most likely, will not get it soon. The Threadripper Pro lineup available to consumers will be slightly different in composition from the CPU set available to system manufacturers. AMD decided to offer enthusiasts only three models with 16, 32 and 64 cores, depriving them of access to a 12-core.
Model | # Of cores / threads | Max / Base Frequency (GHz) | L3 cache (MB) | TDP (W) |
---|---|---|---|---|
AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 3995WX | 64C / 128T | Up to 4.2 / 2.7 GHz | 256 | 280 |
AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 3975WX | 32C / 64T | Up to 4.2 / 3.5 GHz | 128 | 280 |
AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 3955WX | 16C / 32T | Up to 4.3 / 3.9 GHz | 64 | 280 |
Leading motherboard manufacturers will release special sWRX8 motherboards for Threadripper Pro processors, which will be based on the WRX80 system logic set. Images of such cards have already flashed on the web.

AMD has pledged that Threadripper PRO processors will now be available to consumers directly through retailers and online retailers. It is expected to go on sale by March 2021.
