According to Bloomberg, a 12-year-old girl living in London has sued the creators of the short video app TikTok. The girl claims that the video-sharing app has violated the strict data protection rules of the European Union.
The girl's identity was not disclosed, it was approved by the judge. She will be represented by Anne Longfield, Children's Commissioner for England. Longfield says securing anonymity from the court was critical given that a girl could face “direct online bullying by other children or TikTok users” and “negative or hostile reactions from social media influencers” if the identity will be made public.
Justice Mark Warby said the child "intends to take legal action claiming - rightly or wrongly - that her privacy rights and the rights of others like her have been violated in ways that require a remedy." The judge added that the refusal to grant anonymity to the girl could "have a deterrent effect on children's claims to protect their data protection rights."
According to TikTok rules, you can use the application from the age of 13. However, there is a special version of TikTok in which people under the age of 13 can create videos, but not post them. They can also only view videos deemed suitable for children.
TikTok is still one of the most popular apps in the world.
